It’s important to take safety seriously in the workplace so that accidents don’t occur, but it’s just as important to make sure you’re properly protected should an accident happen.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential for keeping you safe at work, and this includes face protection. Using face protection will protect your face from abrasive particles, flying debris or splashes of hazardous liquid that could cause serious damage to one’s face.
There are different types of face protection available for different purposes, and some are designed to be suitable for different tasks and for different work environments. These are:
Safety glasses and goggles: These have lenses that protect the eyes from impact, dust, flying particles and chemical splashes. Safety eye wears to meet the standards for impact resistance, optical quality and frame strength.
Face shields: A face shield is a clear plastic or glass screen that covers the entire face. Face shields come in different shapes and sizes to cover your entire face, while some models only cover part of the face. However, using face shields without safety glasses or goggles will only provide minimal eye protection because it doesn’t cover your eyes. When worn with safety glasses or goggles, they can provide extra splash protection when working with chemicals that could splash into the eyes or onto other parts of the face (for example, in a lab where there is a risk of chemical splashes). It also protects against flying objects (impact resistant) but offers no UV protection.
Welding helmets and filters: They are needed to protect workers from exposure to ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR) radiation as well as sparks during welding operations.
To get the best protection from any form of face protection:
Make sure they are the right size, fit properly and are comfortable.
Check that they are in good condition and without any form of defect.
Make sure they are the right type for the task.
Make sure they are the right type for the material being worked with.
Make sure you select face protection equipment that has been approved for use by nationally recognized testing laboratories or international standards. Always wear eye protection when you work with chemicals, acids or other solutions that could splash on your face or into your eyes.
