An established fact is that casualties and injuries are the risk suffered by workers during work at any site. Falls happen to be a major cause of these damages especially for workers working at a height. Working at heights describes any type of work where the worker performs the obligated task on a level from 6 feet above the ground. Read More
It is then very important that all necessary measures are taken to ensure the safety of workers while working. The safety measure that seeks to prevent the falling of persons working at height is the Fall Protection Systems. Traditionally, these fall protection measures include some of the following:
fixed barriers such as handrails, and guardrails.
surface opening protection such as covers.
warning fences or control zones.
fall or travel restraint systems which are systems that prevent workers from free falls from their work positions or heights.
fall containment system such as fall protection nets.
fall arrest systems which stop a worker from hitting the ground on the event of free falls.
From the items listed above, different measures for fall protection could be identified. However, more effective regardless of other types of fall protection is the Persona Fall Protection System (PFPS). A personal fall protection system is a system (including all devices) an employer uses to protect workers from falling or to safely arrest a worker’s fall if one occurs. Examples of personal fall protection systems include personal fall arrest systems, positioning systems, and travel restraint systems.
A personal fall arrest system is a system employed to arrest a worker in a free fall from a walking-working surface. It consists of a full-body harness, anchorage, and connector. The means of connection might be a lanyard, deceleration device, lifeline, or a suitable combination of these.
A positioning system (work-positioning system) is a network of devices and connectors that is used alongside a body harness or body belt to give a worker a good support system when working on an elevated vertical surface, such as a wall or window sill, with both hands-free. Positioning systems are also known as “positioning system devices” and “work-positioning equipment.”
A travel restraint system is the combination of an anchorage, anchorage connector, lanyard (or any other types of connection), and body support that a worker uses to prevent the possibility of falling over the edge of a walking-working surface.
