A transformer is a device that is used for transferring electric energy from one alternating current circuit to one or more other circuits, either increasing or reducing the voltage through mutual induction. This process is useful because transformers can be more efficient than direct transmission and are also much safer.
A wide range of transformers are used for different purposes for power, audio, and radio frequency applications with various types of circuits. They can be found in many different applications, from high-voltage power lines to tiny electronic appliances that plug into wall outlets.
Transformers can be used to change the voltage of an AC waveform without changing its other characteristics, such as frequency, phase, and wave shape.
The different types of transformers have the same principles but differ in construction methods.
1) Transformer types based on a voltage level
- Step-Down Transformer: It converts the primary voltage level to a lower voltage across the secondary output.
- Step-Up Transformer: This works to increase low primary voltage to a high secondary voltage.
- Isolation Transformers: They are used for safety purposes and to cancel noise transfer from primary to secondary and vice versa.
2) Transformer type based on core material
- Iron core transformer: This makes use of multiple soft iron plates as the core material and has high efficiency.
- Ferrite Core Transformer: This type of transformer uses a ferrite core due to high magnetic permeability. They are normally used in high-frequency applications because they offer very low losses in high-frequency applications.
- Toroidal Core Transformer: This makes use of toroid-shaped core material such as iron core or ferrite core.
- Air Core Transformer: Its flux linkage is entirely made using air.
3) Transformer type based on winding arrangements
- Transformers can be classified using winding orders. One of which is the Auto-winding Transformer. Both the primary and secondary winding functions are fixed, but in the case of an auto-winding transformer, the primary and secondary coil can be connected in series, and the centre-tapped node is mobile.
4) Transformers based on usage
- a) Transformers used in the power domain:
- Power transformers: these transformers are used to transfer the energy to the substation or the public electricity supply.
- Measurement transformer: this is used to isolate the main power and convert the current and voltage in a smaller ratio to its secondary output.
- Distribution transformers: these are step-down transformers which convert high grid voltage to the e d customer-required voltage.
- b) Transformers used in the electronics domain:
- Pulse transformers: these are one of the most used PCB-mounted transformers that produce electrical pulses in a constant amplitude. It is used in several digital circuits where pulse generation is needed in an isolated environment.
- Audio output transformer: this is specially used in audio-related applications where impedance matching is required. audio transformer offsets the loads on the amplifier circuit and loads, typically a loudspeaker.
