Suction Hose: A suction hose is used in sucking water from reservoirs, lakes, rivers, wells, pools, etc., which is to be transported to extinguish a fire. There are three diameters used for a suction hose which are 75mm, 100mm, and 140mm, and the diameter used must be compatible with the capacity of the pumping machine.
Delivery Hose: The delivery hose is the most popular type of fire hose. This type of hose is used in supplying high pressured water or other fire retardants during firefighting. The delivery hose is subdivided into two types which are: percolating hose, and non-percolating hose.
A percolating hose is designed to allow water to ooze through the body of the hose during operation. The streaming of water through the body of the hose preserves the hose from being damaged by flickering embers falling on it or when the hose falls on a hot surface. This makes it very suitable for fighting forest fires.
The Non-percolating hose is made up of a reinforced coating that is produced from polyester or nylon yarns. They also have an inner layer of rubber which makes them water-resistant, hence, they do not trickle water. The non-percolating hose is popularly used when fighting any other fire other than forest fires.
For proper maintenance, the hose needs to be hung up to dry up all remaining water. This is because leaving water in the hose for a long time will damage the material and the hose won’t be fit for purpose anymore. The structure mostly used for hanging a hose is known as a hose tower.
