The full-body harness comes in different forms and can be used for many purposes, while some are specially designed for specific industries. However, they are generally produced from fabrics like nylon and polyester in the form of ropes, wire cord, or synthetic webbing that is weaved jointly into several structures or straps. Also, some harnesses are made from fabrics like Kevlar and it’s specially designed to be used in hazardous circumstances like welding and arc flash environments.
There is an estimated capacity or weight range for every full-body harness and it is not to be exceeded, the user must at all times ensure the harness is one with the necessary capacity. Aside from the weight limit which ranges from 130 to 310 pounds, the capacity also involves the segments of the harness, the type of clothes worn by the worker and the equipment to be used for the job.
Most harnesses used in sustaining work positioning are made with side D-rings to enable the easy connection of positioning lanyards while those used in vertical fall protection systems enable the easy connection of a guided fall arrester to a front D-ring. The number of D-rings needed is dependent on the nature of the job done. There are 3 main preferences of connection points which are the tongue buckle, pass-through buckle, and quick connect buckle.
