They are designed to float but with a ‘skirt’ or ‘curtain’ that sinks deeper into the water which can be 18”-48” deep. A part of it is seen on the top of the water which is the canopy that floats on the surface of the water and extends the barrier formed to the surface of the water.Containment booms come in handy when there is the need to curtail the spread of oil spills and the likelihood of polluting shorelines and the environs, while it makes the recovery process easier. Containment booms enable the concentration of oil in larger quantities on the surface where the spill occurs so that skimmers, vacuums, or other collection instruments can be effectively used.

During spill control and clean up, containment booms are usually the first containment tool to be employed and the very last to be removed from the area affected by the spill. This has earned it the status of the most commonly used and most environmentally acceptable response technique to clean up spills.

Foam-Filled Containment Booms: They are made from high buoyancy foam which is sealed within a fortified fabric pouch to prevent the foam from destroying. Makes for easy deployment.
Inflatable and Self-Inflatable Booms: They are produced from a strong, high-visibility material. When deployed, they are pumped or come up automatically.
Fire boom: They are used when there is the need for controlled burns. A Fire Boom is necessary for effectively containing oil spills during in-situ burning (IB). They are usually connected to water pumping machines to enable a large supply of water through and over the boom throughout the process to stop the flames from consuming the boom.
Trash and Debris Booms: They are used to pick dirt and waste residue from the water with the help of the water current.
