Fire sprinklers are one of the most effective devices used in firefighting today. Their design is highly proactive and efficient in practically extinguishing fire outbreaks. Since the advent of the fire sprinklers, there has been a 65% decrease in death and destruction of properties from fire incidents.Read More
They are highly recommended to be installed at the workplace, homes, schools, office buildings, etc.
A good fire sprinkler system will help extinguish smoke and flames, and prevent the fire from spreading pending the intervention of the firefighters. The importance of this is that it detects the presence of fire, helps in extinguishing the fire while it gives enough time for people to be evacuated from the premises and also prevents damage to properties.
These fire sprinklers are installed on ceilings or sidewalls and are made up of a detector that detects heat, smoke or flames; the main water network has a good water supply which is connected to the sprinkler head through pipes. The sprinkler head automatically releases water when the system detects the presence of fire in the budding.
There are different types of fire sprinklers which are: Wet-pipe: The wet-pipe fire sprinkler system is the most popular type used in residential buildings. Here, cold water is stored in the pressure pipes which will be discharged through the sprinkler head when triggered by the required heat.
Dry-pipe: The dry-pipe fire sprinklers generally require a longer period to be triggered. They are used in buildings that are not occupied (such as parking lots, warehouses, etc) and have no heat but cold temperature. Instead of water, nitrogen gas or electric air is stored in the pipes to help it maintain pressure; however, it is also connected to a water supply. When there is a fire outbreak, it is triggered and the stored air will discharge from the connected pipes, which eventually pumps the water before it flows through the sprinkler head.
Pre-action: This is similar to the dry-pipe system as the pipe is air-filled. A major difference here is that a pre-action fire sprinkler needs two extra triggers to release water. The sprinkler head needs to be opened separately after the detection of smoke, heat or flames. This is aimed at the avoidance of false alarms. They are mostly used at museums or expensive items are kept.
Deluge: This is very similar to the pre-action fire sprinklers but with just one key difference which is that the sprinkler head is always open. It is activated when triggered and the discharged water sometimes has a mixed solution that forms foam and this makes the extinguishing process much more effective. They are mostly used at highly inflammable places such as power generating stations, aircraft hangers, facilities with flammable substances, etc.
