Oils are thin liquid mixed with additives to provide lubrication for industrial equipment and in maintaining tools and to sharpen blades. They are also used when you need to lubricate only a part of a machinery and do not want to disassemble the parts. It is not advisable to use oil on parts of tools or machines that are dirty, or when the surface area is wet or will later come in contact with water.
Grease is a mix of oil and a thickener (mostly lithium-based properties) in addition with other lubricants. Grease is commonly used when the lubricant is needed to stick for a long period of time, or when the machine is not regularly used. It is not advisable to use grease on parts of the machine that have too much resistance, or on moving parts that are immediately needed for use, if not moving parts can cause loss of grease by flinging it around.
Penetrating lubricants are not known to have long-lasting features. They are only used as an additional lubrication, to penetrate tiny cracks and to break up rusts. They are used to remove adhesives and only to loosen nuts and bolts which may have been stuck for a long time and covered in rusts. It is not advisable to use penetrating lubricant on bearings or in place of other lubricants as they don’t last long and can damage mechanical parts.
Dry lubricants are used to substitute oil and grease lubricants and when you don’t want to pull dust and dirt to the area. Dry lubricants are made by mixing water and alcohol and are usually in spray containers. They are used in locks, rods and hinges, or when you want a lubricant that will not attract dust and dirt, and in surfaces you want to remain clean. It is not advisable to use when the surface area will be exposed to water or wetness which can lead to washing away of the lubricants.
The importance of lubricants are: it reduces friction, it cools moving parts and hot areas of engines, it keeps the engine clean, it also guarantees long life of engines and mechanical parts, and so on.
